Is YouTube luring us towards political extremism? A recent study on the platform’s recommendation algorithm by UC Davis shows a tendency to suggest further radical material to right-leaning viewers.
The research scrutinizes millions of YouTube videos, focusing on the probable trajectory of a user's content consumption based on initial political inclinations. It claims that starting with a center-right position tends to lead to more extreme content.
This highlights a conceptual flaw in YouTube's recommendation algorithm - content is suggested based on the goal of keeping users on the site longer, rather than on an ethical framework. As such, a user’s journey does not promote balanced or objective perspectives, but only those which align with and polarize their views.
The team led by Alexandros Papalexopoulos analyzed 13 million English-language political videos posted between January 2008 and December 2020. These spanned a breadth of political ideologies, from extremely left-leaning to right-leaning and everything in between.
This massive dataset, which makes its findings quite robust, is one of the unique aspects of this research. In addition, the team also spent substantial time to build a political ideology scorecard for popular and important channels on the platform.
For each of its analyses, the research team used what they call an 'ideology score', which is based on the video's presumed political leaning and the uploader’s political leaning. Thereby differentiating between political ideologies.
The authors assert that such a difference in recommendations is perpetuated by the tendencies of right-leaning viewers rather than any inherent bias in YouTube's algorithm. They claim that right-leaning users are simply more likely to click on and engage with extremist content.
